Degrassi: The Next Generation debut on CTV on Oct 14th, 2001 (in Canada). The show takes us ten years in the future when Spike's daughter Emma is about to enter junior high. It is fall 2001 and Emma is ready for junior high. Spike owns her own hair salon, Snake teaches at Degrassi, and Joey owns a used car dealership. Caitlin is an environmental activist living in BC and Lucy is a University scholar. Degrassi: The Next Generation takes us where we left off in School's Out.

Alexa and Simon are married and expecting a child. Wheels just got out of jail and Dwayne is still living wih HIV. The series introduces us to Emma, Spike's political and environmentally aware daughter, along with her friends goofball J.T., nerdy Toby, cute and innocent Manny, and smartypants Liberty. The older cast comprise backstabber Paige, joker Spinner, badboy Sean, sporty Jimmy, innocent Terri, and brainy know-it-all Ashley. At the end of the first season Christine (Spike) Nelson hooks up with Archie (Snake) Simpson, one of the teachers at Degrassi Community School.

The second season brings newcomers Craig and goth-chick Ellie to Degrassi. Craig is the stepson to Joey and half sister to Joey's daughter Angela. Spike and Snake get married mid season (season 2) and Spike announces that she is pregnant. Paige gets raped towards the end of season 2 and Craig loses his father to drinking and driving the last 2 episodes of season 2. Each week, Degrassi: The Next Generation, like its predecessor, focuses on adolescent teen issues like drugs, sex, peer pressure, alcoholism, rape, stealing, cheating, and homosexuality. The third season introduces us to characters Alex, Dylan (Marco's new boyfriend) and Rick (Teri's boyfriend). There is a breakup between Emma and Shawn. Shawn starts dating Ellie and Jimmy starts dating Hazel, and Ashley starts dating Craig.

During Season 3, Rick beats Teri and leaves Teri with a permanent head injury, thus, killing her off the show. Manny, who is secretly dating Ashley while Ashley is dating Craig and then Manny becomes pregnant and has an abortion. Paige dates Spinner after Spinner admits his crush on her for several years. Lastly, Caitlin and Joey admit their love for each other and Joey breaks up with his girlfriend.

In Season 4, Spinner and Paige break up, Rick goes on a shooting spree and accidently kills himself and leaving Jimmy paralysed. Finally after many years, Liberty and J.T. finally hook up. Shawn dates Ellie and they move in together. Ashley and Craig get back together and later in the season we find out that Craig is diagnosed as manic depressive. At the end of season 4, Sean moves to Wasaga Beach, Ashley goes to England for the summer, her dad marries his long time partner, Craig crashes the wedding. Marco dumps Dylan for cheating and lying to him.

In Season 5, Manny wants to become a movie star so she inquires about breast enlargement. She gets drunk at a party and the new guy (Peter) moves in on her and take web-cam footage of her topless (she was drunk-she did not know it would be broadcast across the Internet). Emma develops a crush on Peter. Marco comes out to his father (finally), Ashley dumps Craig and stays in England, (thus not appearing in the opening credits of the show and not appearing on any episodes this season --only the season finale). Ellie is now single (Shawn left at the end of Season 4 to be with his parents in Wasaga Beach). Ellie develops a crush on Craig, but Craig chooses Manny, who dumped Spinner last season after Paige dumped his ass. Confused? Spinner is befriended by Darcy, a religious nutbar, and they later date. Jimmy develops an artistic side and gives up basketball and starts hanging around Ellie. Hazel gets jealous and starts becoming bitchy. Liberty and J.T. are an item at the end of season 4 and in the beginning of season 5 becomes preggers. She carries the baby to full term and gives the baby up for adoption. J.T., trying to pretend that they can "do it on their own" juggles 2 jobs at the same time, but ends up being a drug-trafficer, and steals drugs and sells them on the street to crackheads. He ends up not being able to lie to Liberty and be a successful drug dealer so he attempts to end his life by overdosing. Liberty dumps his ass, but remains friends.

Craig emerges as a rock star and his band (Marco, Jimmy, Ellie) slowly fall apart after he gets a record deal, since the record label wants him, not the band. Craig is now off for the remainder of the season until the season finale when he is reunited with Ashley. Paige and Alex falls head over heels. Marco gets back together with Dylan.
